If you had previously performed an upgrade of Windows 8 with a different browser set as default, other than IE; Or if you ran a fresh install of Windows 8 and changed the default browser to something other than Internet Explorer then you have ran into the missing Metro IE version issue.  The solution is pretty simple and I actually covered it as part of my Windows 8 Upgrade article, but I am also including it here for ease of reading.

By now if you have used the Windows 8 Start Screen enough, you have probably discovered the "All Apps" view.  The "All Apps" view  shows you every shortcut that is installed on your machine but perhaps not pinned to the main Start Screen.  In particular if you have upgraded your Windows 7 machine to Windows 8, you may have noticed that your All Apps view shows the folder names that you may have had shortcuts placed in before upgrading.  Here I'll outline the basic steps to customize the "All Apps" view.

Apparently there seems to be a bug, at least in a few cases where the Skype add-on for Chrome version 5.1.0.9560 (at least this version) breaks the cut and paste ability of HTML/rich text.  The version of Chrome in this case was 19.0.1084.52.  If this add-on is enabled and Chrome is open and you attempt to copy text that isn't plain text, IE: HTML or Rich, upon pasting into a new document such as Word or Outlook, it simply pastes the plain text version.  The issue is also apparent in Firefox and all of it definitely points to the Skype Click to Call add-on.

Issue:

You create a project or have one that was created.  Its SharePoint site is working fine.

You open TFS Admin Tool and connect to the project only to get this error, "The Team Project you are trying to connect to have no SharePoint associated with it":

So you have made it to the point in the main quest where you must track down Esbern on your Windows PC.  You get to Esbern but there are glitches.  You cant hear him speak and the dialogue's subtitles fly by, impossible to read.  There are also issues where a door won't open as it should.

The Door Fix

For this one, you can quick-save then quick load while in front of the door.

If the quick save doesn't work you can turn off collisions in the console, then Esbern opens the door:
To get to the console use the tilda key (~) then enter TCL to toggle no-clip mode.  Check this page out for a complete list of commands.

Another option is the chain lightning spell can be used to kill Esbern until the AI makes him open the door.

The file fix

There is a file called Skyrim - Voice Extra.bsa in the Skyrim folder in Program Files.  If you unpack this using the tool designed for Morrowind, you just extract the contents directly into the data folder.

Otherwise, the easiest thing to do is to download the actual unpacked file from gamebanana.com and extract the contents into your Data folder.

The end result is that the folder structure ends up looking like this (as an example):
(The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim install folder )\Data\Sound\Voice\
where Sound and Voice and all the files below this were extracted from the file above.

Now you can enjoy the groovy sound of Esbern's voice and continue your mission.

Feeling lost without the Start Button in Windows 8?  Just cant live without it?  I am not a personal fan of hacking Windows 8 to behave like an operating system that originates in 1995, but if you feel inclined, here is how.  Start8 is a utility from StarDock that will restore the Start  Button in the Taskbar.

You install it and then its back where it always was (in the past).  You just click the desktop from the Start Screen to see it.  After clicking it, you see a Metro styled Start Menu (see you can't escape the future completely).

Start8 is a free download and can be found here.

If you choose to live in the world of Windows 7 and the past, despite having Windows 8, then there is a way for you to do this.  Using the following technique you can have desktop mode load right at start up, after you log in, skipping the initial Metro interface.  This could also be useful for testing in some cases.

Step 1:  Explorer scf script

Open notepad and place the following inside:

[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=Explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop

Now save file as "showmydesktop.scf" and place somewhere you can get at it later, like c:\myscripts
